One thing I’ve noticed while working on document automation is that a lot of digital onboarding still involves surprisingly manual work.
A driving licence is a good example. A user can upload a licence image within seconds, but someone or something still needs to read the information from that image and enter it into the application.
That’s where OCR can make a difference.
Instead of manually copying details, an OCR system can process the uploaded document and return information such as the name, address, licence number, and expiration date in a structured format.
The useful part is what happens next. That extracted information can be passed into customer onboarding, record management, insurance workflows, car rental systems, or other applications that need licence data.
I also think it’s important to separate OCR from verification. OCR is mainly about extracting information from a document, while verification is a different process used when an application needs to validate the document or its details.
We’ve been working on this problem at AZAPI with our Driving Licence OCR API, which is designed to make licence data extraction easier to integrate into applications.
The goal isn’t just to “read an image.” It’s to remove one more repetitive step from a workflow.
